This morning several of us met up at the Lexington Park Post Office, to hunt on some private farm land. There were 9 SMART club members in all that participated in this hunt. Once we had our gear stowed in the two trucks, we then headed south to the farm which was located in Dameron, MD. If you are not familiar with this area, Dameron is about five miles east of the very historic St. Mary’s City, MD. Once we reached the hunt area, We had an overview of the different types of relics that had been found in this area before. This was a very large open field with a slight rolling hill and on the other side was St. Jerome’s Creek. The potenial items that could, and have been found in the past were buttons, musket balls, and other small relics, and potenial for old coins, the land usage dated back to the early 1700's. We hunted this field for a couple of hours, I believe everybody found at least one old button, and a couple of the guys found 3 or 4 buttons. This was a beautiful place to hunt but we decided to try another area. We moved to another field to try our luck. On the second field, I did the silver dance twice. First I uncovered a (1852) 3Cent silver coin. This was a tiny coin he found at about 8” deep. The second silver find was a 1784 Spanish 1 Reale. Also found in the field by other members was two Indian Head pennies, A buffalo nickle, A couple nice shoe buckles. Alot of flat buttons, and a very nice flat button with a sun ray design. After the end of the hunt, when everybody was comparing finds, we came up with interesting relics that are hard to describe but fun to look at. All in all this was a great hunt and a great way to start a new season of metal detecting.
